Daughters of the King

Tonight I had the pleasure of attending the Daughters of the King banquet at my church. (Basically a mother-daughter banquet where any female can attend b/c we are allll daughters of the King :-))

It was a great night! Great food, great company, and a great speaker!

At my table were my sister and myself:

My mom, my grandma, and my Aunt Beth:

and my cousin Rachel, our friend Michelle, and my cousin Sarah
(This picture would be cuter if they had been looking)

There were over 300 women in attendance, and it was great to be sharing the evening together! Every year they have it catered, but some men from the church always serve the food. It is always a nice night to not have to cook or worry about things at home! (I made Luke fend for himself and he heated up some frozen taquitos in the oven for dinner :-P)

The speaker was a very special lady. She was actually my art teacher all through elementary school. In 2004, her husband, son, and brother-in-law were all killed while in Canada on a fishing trip. They were killed by carbon monoxide poisoning in their cabin. She wrote a book after the tragedy, and spoke to us about it tonight. It was obviously a little depressing, but very powerful as well. God has brought her so far, and brought her so much hope in such a horrible situation. It was very enlightening, and I'm so glad I was able to hear her! It was neat to hear my old art teacher speaking about all God has brought her through. God is always there during our darkest times when we need Him the most.
My sister bought the book, which Karen, the speaker, signed. She is going to try to read it this week, and then when she comes home from school on Thursday, she's going to let me borrow it! I can't wait to read it! The book is available on Amazon.com. It's called "Held in Heaven's Arms" by Karen J. Common if you're interested!

There's Julie holding her copy with matching bookmark after she got it signed.

The Daughters of the King banquet is a blessing every year, but this year even more so. I really can't wait to get my hands on that book and devour it this weekend! I hate to admit that I haven't cracked open a book for leisurely reading since I read "The Last Song" over Easter Break. I just haven't had the time or energy! I think this book will kick-start me back into reading again.

I hope everyone has had a fabulous Monday as well!

The Day I Lost it

I have been teaching for three years now. Three-and-a-half if you count my student teaching semester. Today, for the first time ever, I LOST IT while teaching. I lost my temper, blue a gasket, hit the ceiling, flew off the deep end...whatever you wanna call it. I LOST IT.

Now don't get me wrong. I've definitely gotten a little enraged before. I've had moments where I could hear my voice getting louder and my voice getting sterner. My students can normally sense these moments, and that's when they stop whatever they are doing and get to work, because they know that in a moment, there will be consequences if they don't stop.

My fifth grade reading group today apparently did not have their teacher-temper-radars turned on. They did not sense the build up of emotion coming from me, and they did not stop. They kept giving me attitude and rolling their eyes, and talking under their breath until, like I mentioned before, I LOST IT.

Let me set up the story first. It all started last night. I went to bed not feeling well. It was storming, it was hot, and I had a sore throat. Luke was apparently cold for some reason, so the air conditioner was off. This is strange since I normally tell Luke he's a werewolf because his skin radiates so much heat. (What? You didn't know werewolves' skin radiated heat?? You obviously haven't read New Moon, Eclipse, or Breaking Dawn ;-)) Anyway, because of all these factors, I could not sleep. Very frustrating, because I NEVER have trouble sleeping.

I finally fell asleep around 2:30 or 3, and had to wake up again at 6 to get ready for work. I was TIRED. And I still felt sick. Not a good combination.

Fast forward to this afternoon when I had my 5th grade reading group. Apparently they were all having bad days too, because they did not want to do anything. The first half-hour of class consisted of them rolling their eyes, not doing their work, grumbling and complaining, and even ARGUING. With me. You can see why I was getting angry. I started out with a few warnings. The kind that normally get everyone working and on task again. Instead, though, one little girl decided that she would argue with me some more. And that's what did it. I was sick of the attitude. I was sick of the disrespect. I was really sick of the lazy work-ethic. That last little argument REALLY set me off.

I could feel my voice raising, and my blood pressure rising. I was borderline yelling, which I don't ever do. I knew my face was getting red. I could feel myself going on and on lecturing these kids, and I couldn't stop myself. I knew my brows were furrowed and I was glaring at them through my anger. I don't even remember what I said, but I remember thinking the whole time, "Wow, it finally happened. After 3.5 years, I finally completely lost my temper in front of my students." And then it got really quiet. Everyone was either staring at me with their jaws dropped, or looking down at the floor afraid to make eye contact.

And then a wonderful thing happened...the kids stopped talking, the little girl accepted her punishment, and the kids went to work. And I don't regret losing my temper at all! I think it was warranted and that they learned a lesson today. At least they learned that they can't get away with arguing in my classroom!

After about an hour or so, it was about time to go home. Myself and my students were all in much better spirits, and the events of earlier were just about forgotten. The kids were cleaning up and packing for home, and I decided to talk to them about what happened earlier. I told them that I was sorry I had lost my temper, but, "We need to be acting with a little more respect. You cannot argue with a teacher, and we need to lose the attitudes."

Then one little girl looked up at me with the biggest smile on her face and said, "I kinda liked that. You got REALLY feisty!"

I could not keep a straight face, and had to burst out laughing at that. I have definitely never been called feisty before, and it just struck me as hilarious for some reason. And it showed me that kids really and truly do like to be disciplined. They need boundaries, and too many parents aren't giving them any! Anyway, that is a whole other post for another time. I don't need to get on my soapbox today.

Never a dull moment, I tell ya. I chose to wrote about this incident, but there have been sooo many other crazy things going on this week: for example, a 4th grader got dragged down the hall by the resident school police officer screaming "I DON'T WANNA GO TO JAIL!" After stabbing his teacher with a pencil. Also, a little boy ran away somewhere inside the building today and there was a search party out looking for him. At one point today, a little boy came crawling down the hall, following the principal and talking like a baby, smiling as he looked into my room (okay, I admit, those were all three the SAME boy. But he sure does add a lot of drama/craziness!) Also, people are getting riffed left and right. A crazy good thing is that I haven't had to bring my own lunch for half of the week because it's teacher appreciation week and various churches and organizations have brought in food for us. Oh, and I got to hold a baby raccoon today along with the 5th grade reading class to go along with our reading of "Rascal" and "Where the Red Fern Grows."

SEE????! Never a dull moment.

Buuut, I think I can make it through this craziness, because I only have...

What God Can Do

With a little bit of faith and stretching, here is what God can do:
Yes, God did that! That is the side of the church I have attended for the entire 25.5 years of my life! Yesterday half of it was torn to the ground.
Half of it was torn down because HE provided for our church to be able to rebuild. Yesterday the demolition started. We are getting rid of the old wing, and adding a new one, because the old building is just too small. And God has opened lots of doors for us to be able to accommodate more and more people by rebuilding, so more people can be saved and get to know HIM!

He made this possible in the middle of very hard economic times. When nobody seems to have enough money, He somehow provided people with extra money in order to fulfill His purpose.

The building is old and full of history and memories. But God worked on people's hearts so they would be open to demolishing it so that His will and purpose for our church could be fulfilled.
It was a momentous day yesterday, watching it all come down. But we had to let go of our insecurities about the recession, and we had to let go of our attachment to it, so that God could bring us bigger and better things. In the process He is bringing us together as a community and as a church family. He is stretching our faith and teaching us to lean on Him. And He is showing us to let go of something that we have become very attached to, and let him fill that place with something SO MUCH BETTER.
What are you holding onto today?

Let go! God wants to fill the space with something better!

50s Date Night

Luke and I sort of inadvertently had a 50s date night last night without even meaning to! We decided to go to the drive-in theater, and to get some food beforehand. After a quick perusal of the restaurants near the drive-in theater via Luke's iphone, we found a little A&W drive-in Restaurant. How perfect! Drive-in movies, drive-in restaurant...we might as well keep the "drive-in" theme! Especially since Luke injured his leg last week and can't really walk. This way, he would barely have to walk or even leave the vehicle all night!

At the restaurant, we had burgers and fries right in the comfort of Luke's truck. I ordered a Dr. Pepper, and I wish I had known the drinks were served in these big root beer mugs. It just didn't feel right drinking Dr. Pepper outta this...I should've ordered root beer!

The food was delicious! And when we were done, it was time to head to the drive-in so we could find a good parking spot for the double feature

After paying for our tickets, we received our change in $2 bills! So cute. This is all just part of the drive-in experience.

We parked and set up the truck. We know how to do the drive-in right! We put our old futon mattress in the bed of the truck, packed away a bunch of blankets just in case it got cold (which it didn't! Yay!) And pile the pillows in the back. It is the most comfortable/romantic movie experience, if you ask me. complete comfort while watching, plus you are out in the open breathing fresh air with a tapestry of stars surrounding everything :-)
(Notice we were like the first ones there. lol...although there were other cars behind us. We didn't want to get stuck with a bad spot!

We had about 30-45 minutes to wait until the movie started. So we laid (layed? lay? not good with this verb) in the truck, under the open sky, and played "Words with Friends" on Luke's iphone. As you can see, the iphone really does come in handy on date nights!

And then it was time for the movie to start! we were nice an full from our dinner, we were beyond comfortable, our portable radio was sitting on the side of the truck, blaring with the echo of bunches of other radios in the air, the sun was setting...perfect!

There are two different screens showing two different sets of movies. We chose to have a horror flick night, and viewed the screen that was showing "Nightmare on Elm Street" and "The Crazies." I haven't seen a scary movie since probably October, so I figured, why not? I don't like to watch them too often, but Luke really likes them. Anyway, both movies were pretty good. I fell asleep during the second one, but caught most of the action at the end. And Luke tells me it was good. Ha! I knew I wouldn't be able to stay awake through the entirety of both movies!

I was NOT, however, going to fall asleep during Nightmare on Elm Street! lol...the entire movie is about people falling asleep and then being terrorized in their nightmares. So trust me, it was easy to stay awake during that one ;-)

Between the movies, they play a little intermission show on the screen full of vintage videos. This is one of my favorite parts of the evening! It really made me feel like it was the 50s ;-)

So the whole night was just such a great date night! Except for the fact that we had some really annoying people parked down the row from us. I have not heard offensive language like they used since probably high school. And during the second movie, they were completely done with watching it and they were practically screaming and laughing the whole time. Luke was getting so mad!! It was just really rude. And then there was also the time between movies when this guy jumped up behind our truck and kept saying "Freddy Krueger!" Wow. So annoying. We decided next time we will go on a night when they are showing family movies so it will be more of a family atmosphere with less idiots :-P

So anyway, if you have never been to a drive-in theater before, I hope this post made you want to go! It is definitely a good time, and a fun experience (despite the annoying people!)
