Ideas

I just got home from my creative writing class, and I have 1,000 ideas floating around in my head. We are working on creative non-fiction right now. Obviously since I love blogging so much, this is my favorite type of writing that we will cover. I'm not sure what I'm going to write about, but I'm afraid I won't get anything done for the next week because I'll be so busy working on it! We are supposed to write about a memory or a story about our lives.

One idea I had was to use snippets of my past journals as the framework for a story. I have been actively keeping a journal (now a blog) since 1998. Twelve years! I guess I like recording my memories. For what purpose, I don't know. But when I experience something, I don't want it to be lost forever. I want to be able to revisit it.

I decided to share one of the poems I wrote for the class here, mostly because I think my mom wants to read it :-P It doesn't rhyme or even have rhythm or anything, so I've been told it's prose poetry. It's basically about my life and my yearning to go against the grain and live radically.

A Change of Scenery

Two tires hit the pavement and the adventure begins.
My training wheels have been removed.
I am on my own
Without even a map to guide me.

The cool breeze whispers to me as I ride along,
Asking a pertinent question:
Will I coast through this familiar trail?
Or will I risk everything and leave the beaten path?

Only one option will lead me to a beautiful view of the sunset
After a seemingly endless day.

The familiar is so difficult to abandon.

Perhaps today will be the day
My course changes.

Poetry is definitely not my thing, but I enjoyed writing this poem more than I thought I would! It was actually therapeutic for me, and helped me think through the situation. Writing it inspired me to just go for it! I can't wait to see what else I learn during the course of this class!
